Former Athlete’s Unique Insights and Instincts Add Value for Clients; Unity Financial Advisors

Day in and day out, Jaime Cowper is steeped in retirement issues. When she’s not advising clients, she’s consulting like minded advisors. She can’t imagine doing anything else.

But this wasn’t always what Cowper, president of Unity Financial Advisors, had in mind for her future. As a college student, she played basketball and worked part time as a bank teller while pursuing her degree. Unsure what to do next, Cowper continued working at the bank, becoming a fulltime personal banker after graduation.

This was the first of several important steps Cowper took toward her current role. With each step, she immersed herself in a different part of the financial services industry and built on the knowledge she’d acquired before.  After banking came her Series 6 and 63 securities licenses, her insurance license, and her deep dive into the realm of retirement planning. In October 2011, Cowper earned her Series 65 and made her fiduciary role official.

“I learned two things early in my career,” Cowper says. “I loved the relationship side of things, and I wanted the freedom to serve my clients’ best interests. So, I set out to learn all aspects of retirement planning—in a slow, deliberate manner, with a fantastic mentor guiding me along the way.”

Covering All Aspects of Retirement Planning

Cowper thinks and acts holistically on behalf of her clients. In addition to investments and insurance, she tackles the big issues—Social Security, long-term care planning, etc.—to help clients maximize their retirement income and be ready for the unexpected. And she uses software to calculate the hard numbers so she can show clients where they’ll draw retirement income and why they shouldn’t be afraid to spend on things they enjoy.

“Some advisors come from the advisory side and focus primarily on money management,” Cowper says. “Other advisors came up in the insurance industry, so they’re annuities-focused. I’ve had experience on both sides, and I’m a big proponent of both. I want my clients to be able to take advantage of a range of products and vehicles that will grow and protect their assets and provide income for life.”

Teaming Up With Others to Serve Clients Best

Her wide-ranging experience and training gave Cowper a strong foundation in the fundamentals of planning. Her mentors were instrumental in helping her succeed. But Cowper isn’t one to rest on her laurels. A team player at heart, she frequently connects with other advisors and taps into their niche specialties to better serve her clients.

“I’m part of a network of advisors, and we work jointly on planning issues when called for,” Cowper says. “Sharing ideas and knowledge with other professionals allows me to grow and bring more value to my client relationships. It’s one of the most important things I can do to help my clients look forward to and enjoy a secure retirement.”
